Experiential Learning

With an emphasis on hands-on learning experiences, you have opportunities to simulate real-life scenarios, make connections, and build your resume.

Europe as Your Classroom

Take your classroom on the road with two course-integrated, faculty-led Study Tours with your Core Course! Visit important sites and meet with local experts who add cultural perspectives to your knowledge of the field.

Faculty Who Teach What They Do

Most faculty work as professionals in the areas they teach, bringing theory to life by sharing real-world examples in the classroom.

Supportive Environment

Academic counseling and personal support resources are available to you during your time abroad, providing you a solid foundation upon which to grow.

Cultural Learning

In your courses, you focus on the importance of cultural context and are exposed to how issues are perceived, lived, and theorized in Europe. It is also your chance to reflect on the cultural norms and values that shape you.

Meet the Locals

Living in a Homestay, signing up for a sports team, taking a Swedish Language and Culture course, or attending evening seminar are among the ways to build your international network and meet the locals.

Academic Program
Students enroll in a core course selected from among 11 different programs including: Computer Science, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Neuroscience, Psychology, and Public Health. Core Courses include a week-long Program Study Tour to a European destination and a Core Course Week, comprised of a two-day seminar in Stockholm and three-day short Study Tour.

Pomona students are required to enroll in a Swedish Language and Culture course. For the remaining courses, students select electives from across 50+ disciplines. Not all courses taught at DIS are eligible for Pomona credit. For example, Pomona does not award credit for Business, Entrepreneurship, Fashion, or Management courses. Other disciplines may also offer courses not approved by Pomona. Students must have all coursework pre-approved by the International and Domestic Programs Office.

Students may take only one course on a CR/NC basis. Students may not take the core course on a CR/NC basis.

Standard course enrollment is 15 DIS credits, which equals 3.75 Pomona credits.

Living Arrangements
Students choose between four housing options: a homestay, a living and learning community, Studentboende, or a DIS residential community. Please visit DIS’s website to learn specifics about the available housing options.

Homestays are with Swedish families located within a reasonable commute of the DIS center. Students have their own room or share an adequately-sized room with another DIS student.

The Living and Learning Communities (LLC) are co-curricular housing options that bring together students with shared interests across DIS and cultivate their passions by allowing their extracurricular interests to shape the way they explore Stockholm and encounter local culture.

Studentboende housing arrangements are co-ed dorm-style residential buildings located throughout the city that accommodate students from different institutions across the greater Stockholm area. You will meet Swedish and international students, while still having a DIS support system.

The DIS Residential Communities house students with other DIS participants.

Number of Students
DIS enrolls an average of 200 U.S. university students per semester, selected from a national pool.
