Program Description:
Historia Económica de México will be led by Pendleton Professor of Economics Fernando A. Lozano and Chau Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Economics Karla Cordova in summer 2025.

The program will allow students to use economic tools to understand the economic history and development of México. The course will be divided into five historical eras: Pre-Columbian, Colonial, Reform and Porfiriato, Post-Revolution and Industrialization, and Modern Mexico.

The experience of being in Mexico, while learning of its economic history in Spanish, will allow students to immerse themselves in the culture and engage with history not only in the museums, but also in meetings with historians, economists, and business leaders. The distinct history of Mexico indicates that the economic development of the country has been a function of its geography, natural resources, and relationship with the United States. During visits to city centers, historical landmarks, and museums, students will be able to reconstruct the economic characteristics of each historical era. Each city visited will evidence how power, social class, and economics intertwined to create modern day Mexico.

 
Academic Program:
Students will be required to enroll in Economics 144: Historia Económica de México for the summer 2025 session. This program earns 1 Pomona credit and will be conducted in Spanish. Students will be required to submit a final paper and conduct a presentation over Zoom during the post-travel coursework component.
Mexico City

Program Dates: June 1-July 2, 2025
Coursework in Oaxaca: June 1-14, 2025

Program Fee:
$5,895 per student - includes tuition, housing onsite, three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), course-related activities and excursions, transportation onsite and between Oaxaca and Mexico City.

Roundtrip airfare (flying into Oaxaca and out of Mexico City): $700 (estimate based out of LAX; students arrange their own flights from the location of their choice)
Visa (if required): $53
Immunizations: $189 (Typhoid vaccination is recommended - estimated cost may vary depending on insurance provider)


Withdrawal and Refund Policy:
Pomona College makes significant financial commitments based on expected student participation. Students will be subject to the withdrawal policy after signing the enrollment agreement.


Financial Aid: 
Need-based financial assistance from Pomona College is available for eligible Pomona College students, to apply towards the program fee. The amount of financial assistance will be based on the same percentage of need-based financial aid that each student receives for their regular semester cost of attendance. Students from other Claremont Colleges should inquire about whether financial aid is available through their home school.

Students are encouraged to apply for national scholarships to cover additional expenses, such as round-trip airfare, visa fees (if applicable), and immunizations (if applicable). A list of national scholarship resources can be found here. Students who apply for national scholarships may be eligible for additional assistance from the IDPO to cover these additional expenses if they are not awarded an outside scholarship.
 

Living Arrangements:
Students will stay in homestays in Oaxaca and hotels in Mexico City.

Enrollment is 10-16 students.
 

Eligibility:
  • Completion of Economics 51: Principles of Macroeconomics and Spanish 44: Advanced Grammar and Composition or the equivalent.
  • This program is open to all majors.
  • Participants must be enrolled students at the Claremont Colleges and must not have graduated prior to the start of the program.
  • Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing to apply for and participate in this program.

Students will be required to meet with an advisor in the IDPO prior to opening a program application. Please contact idpo@pomona.edu to request an advising appointment.

Applications are due on January 26. Students will be notified on February 14 if they have been selected for the program. Students must submit their enrollment agreement by February 24 to confirm their place in the program. The Registrar’s office will then enroll confirmed students in Economics 144 PO for the summer session.
