Program Description:
Students at the ColosseumThe Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (ICCS) provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to study ancient history, archaeology, Greek and Latin literature, Italian language, and ancient art and is affectionately known as the "Centro."  The Centro has evolved into the premier North American center for the study of the classical world in Italy. Located in a four-story building on one of the main streets of the Janiculum, the Center is ten minutes by bus from the Piazza Venezia and downtown Rome. The building is owned by an order of nuns, the Suore Infermiere dell'Addolorata, and contains student bedrooms, classrooms, a library, offices, dining rooms, and a kitchen. Outside is a small and pleasant garden. 

The program of study is based on a comprehensive course, The Ancient City, which integrates the topography of ancient Rome with its social history, literature, and culture. Because of its intensity and requirement of time, this course is the equivalent of two semester courses. The program includes many visits to archaeological sites and museums, both in Rome and its vicinity (e.g. Ostia, Cosa, and Hadrian's villa at Tivoli) and two longer field trips, one to the Bay of Naples (Pompeii, Herculaneum, Cumae) and the other to the temples, villas, and museums of Sicily.

Academic Program
Pomona students take the required core course, the Ancient City (2 Pomona credits), Elementary Italian (1 Pomona credit), and one or two additional electives (1 Pomona credit each) from the following:
  • Intermediate Latin
  • Advanced Latin
  • Intermediate Greek
  • Advanced Greek
  • Renaissance and Baroque Art History
  • Conservation and Management of the Material Heritage of Ancient Rome
Students with previous background in Italian language, who test out of the Elementary Italian language course, may substitute this course with a different elective.

There is no CR/NC option on this program.

Living Arrangements
Students live in dorm rooms in the ICCS Center, mostly doubles. The neighborhood is residential with apartment buildings, small shops, cafes, and services. Three meals a day are provided at the Center, Monday through Friday. Pomona provides a meal stipend for remaining meals.

Number of Students
The ICCS enrolls up to 36 students, selected from a competitive national pool.

Eligibility  
  • Applicants must be currently registered undergraduates majoring in Classics or in Art History with strong classical interests and background.
  • A background in Roman History is advised.
  • 3.0 GPA required.
  • Preference will be given to those students who are prepared to take courses in Latin and/or ancient Greek at the intermediate level or higher.
