Perfecting Spanish competency through guided language immersion and facilitated social and cultural integration is what motivates students at the School in Spain. Well in advance of leaving the U.S., students are encouraged to reflect upon how they want to achieve their goals while in Spain; once in Spain, students work with staff to find ways of integrating into the Spanish language and culture by exploring their own interests.

Madrid is a vibrant city of more than 3 million residents. As the capital of Spain, it is an important political, economic, and cultural center, and is home to several museums, theatres, and an active nightlife. The student population in Madrid exceeds 200,000, which gives the city an exciting, boisterous, and friendly atmosphere. And even though Madrileños are accustomed to living a cosmopolitan and urban lifestyle, they maintain a strong Spanish identity that makes the city a fascinating location to learn and live the Spanish language and culture.

The Sede Prim in Madrid, the headquarters of the School in Spain, houses the undergraduate as well as the graduate programs. This facility, run by Middlebury College, offers an academic program designed specifically for its students. The city of Madrid provides students a wealth of intellectual and cultural possibilities and enjoys a central location, making travel to various regions of the country convenient.

Academic Program
During the first week of each semester, all semester students participate in an orientation designed to introduce Madrid and Spanish life. The academic program in Madrid consists of four courses taught in Spanish (1.0 Pomona course credit each). All students are required to take one course in advanced Spanish grammar and composition. Students then choose three electives from a range of courses.

Upon recommendation of the Middlebury Director, students may also register for one class with certain U.S. study abroad programs based at the Instituto Internacional. Students should avoid courses that overlap or duplicate Pomona's Spanish 170, 185a, and 185b. Spring semester students have the option to enroll in courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Students are not permitted to take any courses taught by the Middlebury study center on a P/NC basis, however, students may take direct enrollment university courses on a P/NC basis.

Living Arrangements
With the assistance of the program administration, students find their own accommodations in homestays, apartments, or residence halls. A room and board allowance is provided by Pomona College.

Number of Students
The Sede Prim Center in Madrid enrolls up to 40 students each semester.
