Perfecting Spanish competency through guided language immersion and facilitated social and cultural integration is what motivates students at the School in Spain. Well in advance of leaving the U.S., students are encouraged to reflect upon how they want to achieve their goals while in Spain; once in Spain, students work with staff to find ways of integrating into the Spanish language and culture by exploring their own interests.

Getafe is a city of 100,000 located just 40 minutes south of Madrid by train.  Its proximity allows students enrolled at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Middlebury's host institution, to experience Spanish university life while still benefiting from the cultural and social attractions of the capital.  Students typically live in Madrid and commute to campus each day by train.

The Universidad Carlos III is housed on a small campus just a few minutes walk from the Getafe train station. Students enroll directly in classes with their Spanish peers in art history, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, and political science.

Academic Program
Students enroll directly in two or three university courses at La Universidad Carlos III. Students may opt for one elective at Sede Prim (in addition to their language course). Students on the Getafe program will take their language course in Madrid at the program's center. Students can complete a credit-bearing internship in place of one course. Students are required to take at least one course with significant focus on Spain.

Students are not permitted to take any courses taught by the Middlebury study center on a CR/NC basis, however, students may take direct enrollment university courses on a CR/NC basis.

Living Arrangements
With the assistance of the program administration, students find their own accommodations in homestays, apartments, or residence halls. A room and board allowance is provided by Pomona College.

Number of Students
The Middlebury Getafe program typically has 10-15 students per semester, selected from a national pool. The Universidad de Carlos III in Getafe enrolls 18,000 students.
