Program Description:

Academic Program
The program begins with an orientation and a non-credit preliminary course in French language. Middlebury administers a language proficiency exam to determine what language course students will take during the semester. All semester-long students must take a French language course at the Centre Madeleine at either the intermediate high or advanced level. The language course includes a cultural immersion component, and students may choose from several options including a language partner, cooking classes, and volunteer work. Students may choose to take two other courses at the Centre Madeleine. The remaining courses are taken at one of the local universities. The Middlebury center staff includes an academic advisor to help students choose their university courses. Middlebury also offers students the opportunity to complete a credit-bearing internship.

Please note that students enrolled at Sciences Po Paris take all of their courses at Sciences Po, including the required language course, and do not take any courses at the Centre Madeleine.

Students are required to take at least one course with significant focus on France.

For fall 2022 and spring 2023:
Pomona students take the equivalent of 4 Middlebury credits for a total of 4 Pomona credits.

For fall 2023 onwards:
Pomona students take the equivalent of 4-5 Middlebury credits for a total of 4-5 Pomona credits.

Students are not permitted to take any courses taught by the Middlebury study center on a CR/NC basis, however, students may take direct enrollment university courses on a CR/NC basis.

In addition to the academic program, Middlebury organizes excursions in and around Paris and one overnight excursion. In the spring semester, this overnight trip has usually been to chateaux in the Loire Valley or to Monet's garden.

Fall applicantsPlease note that some universities end in mid-December and some end in mid-January. Students are required to remain in Paris until their last exam is complete, and there is no guarantee that faculty would arrange early exams. Students should make sure that the university they select has an end date that would allow them to return in time for the spring semester at Pomona. Students must book their flights for the full program dates, based on their selected university. If their professors allow them to take their exams early, and students choose to depart before the end of term (after all exams are complete), students would be responsible for covering the cost to change their flights. Pomona will provide a room and board allowance to cover the full dates of the student's program, and students may use any unused portion of this allowance towards any required flight change fee.
