Program Description:
Programs by Petition are study abroad programs that have not been pre-approved by the International and Domestic Programs Committee (IDPC). These programs are available to students whose academic needs are not met by the existing slate of Approved Programs. In order to apply for a Program by Petition, students must first meet with the Director or Assistant Director of International and Domestic Programs to discuss their program of interest. If the program meets Pomona's minimum requirements for study abroad, the student would then petition the IDPC for approval in advance of the application.  The petition deadline can be found here.

Pomona normally requires a 3.33 GPA minimum for Programs by Petition. Any student below a 3.33 GPA must present persuasive reasons why this policy should be waived. Students below a 3.0 GPA may not petition for a program.

Students should complete the appropriate college-level language study in preparation for the proposed program, if that language is taught at The Claremont Colleges. For international programs, students are expected to complete a content course abroad related to the destination and take a host country language course, if the official language is not English.

All Pomona College International and Domestic Programs policies and procedures outlined in the International and Domestic Programs Guide and website apply to students who participate in Programs by Petition, except as noted.

Grades and GPA
Grades on Programs by Petition are posted on the transcript, but not calculated into the Pomona GPA.

The International and Domestic Programs CR/NC policies apply as usual for Programs by Petition, including the following guidelines:
  • Pomona will not allow CR/NC requests on programs that do not permit this option.
  • Students may not take an independent study or directed research course abroad on a CR/NC basis.
  • Students may not take a program's core course on a CR/NC basis.
Obtaining a Transcript
All students studying on Programs by Petition are responsible for having an official transcript of their work while abroad sent promptly to the International and Domestic Programs Office for review and posting to the Pomona record.  Official transcripts should be sent to the following address after completion of courses abroad:

Pomona College
International and Domestic Programs Office
