Freiburg - Language & Area Studies

Program Overview

Tucked at the foot of the Black Forest, Freiburg is the quintessential southern German town, with its winding streets and historic architecture. It is also home to Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, consistently rated one of the top universities in Germany. We invite you to study abroad in Freiburg and to immerse yourself in student life and German language in this vibrant university town.

Ideal for students interested in rapidly improving their German language skills, the IES Abroad Freiburg Program offers you IES Abroad and university courses taught in German by distinguished local faculty.

You can also enroll in courses at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg or other local academic institutions where you will experience the German education system first-hand.

Visit www.IESabroad.org for complete program details.

Why Freiburg?

It is impossible not to fall in love with Freiburg. Maybe it's the curving cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and beautiful cathedral. Or maybe it's the city's progressive mindset--Freiburg shows a remarkable commitment to the environment and the development of sustainable technologies. Either way, we invite you to study abroad in Freiburg and discover all there is to love about this enchanting university town.

Student Life

We strive to make sure you feel safe, cared for, and at home while you’re away from home. Whether it’s the orientation program that makes you feel prepared, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, the cultural events that make it easy and fun to meet other international and local students, or the field trips and walking tours that take you to places tourists don’t usually see—we’re all about our student service. Learn more about the day-to-day studying abroad on this program. From field trips to housing, it’s all on IES Abroad’s website.

Scholarships & Aid

That's why we commit $5 million in study abroad scholarships and aid, all offered through one quick and easy application. Check out all of our scholarship options at www.IESabroad.org/aid.

Academic Program
Pomona students enroll 16-19 IES credits for a total of 4.0-4.75 Pomona credits. Students are required to enroll in an advanced German language course at the IES center and at least one course at a local university. The remaining electives can be taken in a combination of IES center or local university courses.

Highly advanced students may substitute a German literature course for the language course.

Students may not enroll in courses taught in English.

At least one course must have a significant focus on Germany.

Students may take only one IES course on a CR/NC basis. Students may not take the required German language course on a CR/NC basis.

Note: Normally, this program is only available for Pomona students in the spring semester because of conflicts with the German academic calendar dates in the fall. The spring semester dates allow full participation in regular university courses. Students with compelling academic reasons may apply for the fall, but they will not be able to take university courses since most fall courses run through February.
